How difficult is it to learn conversational Spanish? And long does it take to become proficient?

I'm planning on taking elementary Spanish courses at a local community college.
In addition, as time allows, consider getting a part time job at a Mexican Restaurant. Like one night a week. If you are emerged in it, then you will learn it quicker. In addition, you will learn the slang and how to speak and comprehend it as opposed to just learning how to read and write. Also, consider watching a Spanish soap. They are every bit as cheesy in Spanish as they are in English, but it gives you context from which you can try to understand what is being said. They are usually on in the evenings. Pick one and watch it a couple of times a week. I don't recommend the news shows, as the talk Really fast. Also, avoid the "funny" shows, as it is hard enough to learn a new language, trying to understand the play on words is very hard. I wish you the best of luck.
