Computer Dictionary – An Introduction

You’ve heard of Wikipedia. Do you know the Webopedia? It’s an online computer dictionary. It contains everything you need to know about computers.

In this computer dictionary there are many features to explain computers, as well as a search. These features are all contained on a handy left side menu. WHere are some of them.

There’s a handy term of the day in this computer dictionary. The site offers it on the web page, or via email subscription. People can even forward it to their friends via email. All the past terms are archived.

A typical term of the day on this computer dictionary is skyscraper ad. It’s defined as a banner that’s taller than a standard 120 x 240 pixel vertical banner ad. On Halloween of 2008 the word of the day was zombie. No its not an undead person. Zombie is a computer that has been planted with a small program that allows a hacker to take control. These zombies are then used by hackers to launch attacks against websites. Many well-known sites including Amazon had been brought down by zombie attacks. They’re called zombie ants too. Like ants the zombies are tiny and hard working.

The computer dictionary has the term end-user. This term goes back a long time. It refers to an individual who uses a product after all the bugs have been worked out. It distinguishes between users may use a product for development and users who needed to be bug free. End users don’t know a great deal about the inner workings of computers. Or at least that’s what must be assumed by the software developer. Most people who aren’t programmers or engineers are end-users.

The website that’s a computer dictionary also has a did you know section. It’s like the rest of the story for computers. For example many people don’t know the difference between a virus a worm and a Trojan horse. A virus is dormant until a person clicks open some file, like an executable. Worms don’t require action from a human. A Trojan horse is an apparently useful piece of software that encourages a user to execute it. Once opened it can deliver a variety of problem programs.

A computer dictionary is a very useful tool in this age. Look one up online.
